How did this happen? Soo U18 Greyhounds had won 16 straight games heading into today’s Great North Under 18 Hockey League championship outing against the North Bay U18 Trappers. But the visitors from North Bay upended the powerhouse Hounds by an 8-5 score to steal the Great North title in stunning fashion.

The Soo had strutted through the regular season in the Great North, posting a record of 26-2 and outscoring the opposition by a resounding margin of 152-46. And through three games of the round robin and the semi-final match of the championship tournament, the Soo posted a 4-0 record and outscored its opponents by a ridiculous 31-3 margin.

But when it came down to today’s title tilt for all the marbles, it was North Bay that came out on top with the 8-5 triumph and the crown of Great North champions. The Trappers had lost three of four games to the Greyhounds during the regular season and finished 10 points behind them in the standings with a record of 21-7.

But it is the Trappers who are Great North champions following a big win in the biggest game of the season.
