Shreveport Mudbugs, an expansion team set to begin play in the North American Hockey League this fall, have hired Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. native Francis Anzalone as associate coach.

Just 28-year old, Anzalone nonetheless has seven years experience as a coach in the top two junior leagues in the U.S.A — the NAHL and the United States Hockey League.

Anzalone has spent the past three-plus seasons with the Aberdeen Wings of the NAHL.

“I feel very fortunate to be joining the Shreveport Mudbugs,” Anzalone said. “The vision of the organization, the quality of the people involved and the passionate fan base makes this a very intriguing opportunity.”

Anzalone is the son of long-time collegiate and minor-pro coach Frank Anzalone, who steered the Lake Superior State University Lakers to their first of three National Collegiate Athletic Association championships back in 1988.

The elder Anzalone currently works as a college scout for the Calgary Flames of the National Hockey League.
