Cam Hackett has elite potential

Sault Ste. Marie native Cameron Hackett has the potential to be an elite goaltender at the Division 1, National Collegiate Athletic Association level.

So says Seth Appert, head coach of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Engineers, a prestigious Division 1, NCAA program that is based in Troy, N.Y.

The 6-foot-1, 210 pound Hackett, who has a 1996 birth date, heads to RPI this season after being a standout for the lowly Lincoln Stars of the United States Hockey League during the 2014-2015 campaign. Hackett tended twine for parts of the previous two seasons with the Green Bay Gamblers of the USHL.

Appert and RPI apparently think enough of Hackett that they are bringing him in as a freshman goalie despite the fact that he has two seasons of junior eligibility remaining.

“First of all, we are excited to have Cam join the RPI hockey family,” said Appert. “He has the talent and competitiveness to be an elite collegiate goalie. His years in the USHL have readied him for NCAA hockey.”

Hackett left Sault Ste. Marie as a young teenager to play in southern Ontario and was a fourth-round pick of the Owen Sound Attack at the 2012 Ontario Hockey League draft. He did not report to Owen Sound in order to preserve his NCAA eligibility.

He is the son of Dr. Pat Hackett and Roberta Hackett of Sault Ste. Marie.
