Hockey Remembrance Day at Pullar
Saturday looms as a big hockey day at Pullar Stadium in the Michigan Soo.
In preparation, Lake Superior State University president Tom Pleger and mascot Seamore practise their face off (photo above) for Saturday’s first-ever Hockey Remembrance Day at the venerable Pullar.
Taking the faceoff (photo above) are Laker seniors Andrew Dommett and Stephen Perfetto.
Saturday will mark the first time that the hockey Lakers will hold their traditional Blue-White intra-squad game at the historic Pullar, which is where the Detroit Red Wings of the National Hockey League held their training camps throughout the 1940s and 1950s.
The hockey Lakers and LSSU professor Heather Smith’s Introduction to Marketing class are rolling the day’s proceeds into the Marcus Andary benefit to name the Pullar’s Section J in his honour.
A Soo native and former hockey player, Andary was killed in 2011 while helping a stranded motorist. The Hockey Remembrance day effort hopes to raise $5,000 to clinch the memorial.
Admission to Saturday’s 4 p.m. Laker intra-squad game will be by donation.
The scrimmage will feature two 25-minute halves with a running clock. During the 15-minute intermission, chuck-a-puck and a 50/50 raffle will be held to help generate more donations.
The Laker intra-squad game will precede a regular-season, North American Hockey League match between the Soo Eagles and the Janesville Jets. Game time is 7 p.m.

A person could take in a full day of hockey at the Pullar, if so inclined, this Saturday. The Sault High Blue have their annual “Pink in the Rink” game against Escanaba at 1pm. It should also be noted that Marcus is a former captain of Sault High Blue Devil Hockey.
After winning 16 games last season the Lakers have only won 7 this year with 4 games left. Was this expected based on their grads and freshmen? Thanks.
