Lake Superior State University Lakers head coach Damon Whitten has completed the staff of his Western Collegiate Hockey Association team by hiring Peter Aubry as an assistant coach.

The 37-year old Aubry, who spent the past three seasons as an assistant at Mercyhurst University after playing professionally for nine years, is a former goalie who will specialize in coaching the Laker defense.

The hiring of Aubury follows the recent return to LSSU of Rich Metro as a Laker assistant.

“We’re excited to have him on board,” Whitten said of Aubry. “Working with our goaltenders will be a big area of expertise he will bring. And he’ll complement Rich Metro’s role as offensive co-ordinator by being defensive co-ordinator, implementing strategies with our defense and penalty kill.”

As Whitten noted when Metro was hired, all three LSSU coaches will have a hand in recruiting.

“What struck me in the process was Peter’s ability to build relationships with other coaches, recruits and their families,” Whitten said. “He has a great ability to relate to kids and build trust.”

Aubury, a native of Windsor, Ont., is anxious to join the Lakers.

“I was lucky that while I was (at Mercyhurst) that (head coach) Rick Gotkin let me do quite a bit,” said Aubry, who listed forecheck, neutral-zone forecheck, line rush against and defensive zone coverage as his on-ice areas of concentration.

“I’m thankful for the opportunity to grow and learn things that I can bring to the Lake State program,” Aubry added.
