Led by new head coach Damon Whitten, the Lake Superior State University Lakers begin the 2014-2015 Western Collegiate Hockey Association season at home against the Michigan Tech University Huskies this weekend.

The Lakers and Huskies are set to face off at 7:07 p.m. on Saturday and 5:07 p.m. on Sunday at Taffy Abel Arena.

For the first time in nine seasons, a new head coach will man the bench for the Lakers as Whitten takes the reins from the fired Jim Roque. Whitten begins his first head-coaching gig after spending the previous four seasons as an assistant at Michigan Tech.

Among the returnees to the Lakers for the 2014-2015 campaign is 2013-2014 WCHA freshman-of-the-year Alex Globke, who had 12 goals, 19 assists, 31 points in his first season at LSSU.

The Laker roster features 11 newcomers including former North American Hockey League goaltending stars Kevin Aldridge and Peter Megariotis.

Also new to the Lakers is defenceman Aidan Wright, who played in the Great North Midget Hockey League for the erstwhile Soo North Stars from 2008 to 2010.

What you think about “Lakers begin WCHA season at home”

  1. I think Damon Whitten wants the Lakers to play a more uptempo style of game . No doubt he’s had the players really working on there physical conditioning to support that type of game.
