The good ship Laker will set sail with a new captain. Senior defensemen Aidan Wright will wear the captain’s jersey for the Lake Superior State Lakers this season.

Wright, who was born in the small town of Wawa, Ont. before moving to Sault Ste. Marie as a young teenager, originally joined the Lakers as an unheralded, late-summer freshman recruit just prior to the start of the 2014-2015 Western Collegiate Hockey Association season.

Joining Wright as Laker leaders for the 2017-2018 season are senior defenseman Ryan Renz and junior forward Gage Torrel, who will serve as assistant captains.

Wright appeared in all 36 of the Lakers game in 2016-2017 and had one goal, six assists, seven points from his blue line post.

In all, Wright has appeared in 114 career games at Lake Superior State over three full seasons and has put up 16 points, including three goals.

The Lakers begin the 2017-2018 WCHA regular-season schedule on the October 6-7 weekend with a home-and-home series vs. the Northern Michigan Wildcats.

Heading into the 2017-2018 season, the Lakers are ranked sixth in the 10-team WCHA.
