It figures that the search for a new head coach of the Lake Superior State University Lakers is winding down.

Friday is the closing date for applications for the position that has been vacant since Jim Roque was fired on March 11 after nine years as Laker bench boss.

Among those believed to have applied for the job with the Western Collegiate Hockey Association team are former Laker assistant coaches — and Michigan Soo natives — Rich Metro and Joe Shawhan.

Metro has been coaching in France the past few seasons while Shawhan is now an assistant with the Northern Michigan University Wildcats.

Damon Whitten, an assistant with the Michigan Tech Huskies, has also reportedly applied for the Laker position as has John LaFontaine, who is coaching the Tier 1 bantam team at Shattuck-St. Mary’s.

Former Laker players Rene Chapdelaine and Anthony Palumbo have shown interest in the position though it is not certain if they have formally applied with Friday’s closing date looming.

The status of current Laker assistant coaches Tim Christian and Doug Laprade is not known.
