Tech no. 3 in WCHA rankings
Coached by Sault Ste. Marie native Joe Shawhan, Michigan Tech Huskies are ranked third among 10 teams in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association’s pre-season poll preparatory to the 2017-2018 campaign.
A long-time assistant and associate coach in the WCHA, having worked for the Lake Superior State Lakers and Northern Michigan Wildcats before going to Michigan Tech, the respected, respectable, 54-year old Shawhan is about to enter his first season as head coach of the Houghton-based Huskies.
Shawhan will return 18 players from the 2017-2018 Michigan Tech team that won 20 games for the third season in a row with a record of 23-15-7 en route to winning the WCHA tournament championship.
Minnesota State is ranked as the no. 1 team in the WCHA heading into the 2017-2018 season, just ahead of no. 2 ranked Bemidji State and Michigan Tech at no. 3.
Bowling Green is ranked no. 4 followed by Ferris State at no. 5, Lake Superior State at no. 6, Northern Michigan at no. 7, Alaska at no. 8, Alabama-Huntsville at no. 9 and Alaska-Anchorage at no. 10.
