Birds, Cubs, Rapids win

Opening round, best of seven playoff action continued in the Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League on Monday with three games.

Soo 4, Blind River 1. Local lad Brock Santa Maria and fellow forward Jackson Truchan both had three point outings as the Thunderbirds nudged the visiting Beavers to the brink of elimination. The Thunderbirds lead the series three games to none.

Cameron Walker

Sudbury 2, Espanola 1. Cameron Walker broke a 1-1 tie with just over a minute to play in the third period to give the visiting Cubs the win before 437 fans at the Espanola Regional Recreation Centre. Jake Marois was stellar between the pipes for the Paper Kings with 48 saves. Sudbury now leads the series 3-1.

French River 4, Timmins 3. Playing at home, the Rapids got into the win column and narrowed the Rock’s series lead to 2-1. Defenseman Adam Boucher scored the game winner in overtime and Brady Dyer made 41 saves for French River.
