As was first reported by HockeyNewsNorth.com on Saturday, a change in operation awaits the Soo Thunderbirds of the Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League.

Operation of the non-for-profit franchise is expected to be shifted to the group that owns The Tech building on Wellington St. E. in Sault Ste. Marie. The Tech group is expected to issue a press release this week regarding its takeover of the Thunderbirds.

The Thunderbirds were founded as an NOJHL franchise in 1999 by a group that was led by local businessman Sam Biasucci. Biasucci later transferred control of the Thunderbirds to the duo of Pat Egan and Al Jones who subsequently handed operation of the team to Albert Giommi.

As the Thunderbirds prepare for off-ice change at the top, the reigning NOJHL champions are in pursuit of repeat glory on the ice.

After finishing in first place during the 2015-2016 regular season with 95 points, the Thunderbirds blew through the first round of the NOJHL playoffs, sweeping the cross-river Soo Eagles in four straight games.

Now it’s on to face the Elliot Lake Wildcats for the West Division title in a best-of-seven series that is slated to open this Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Essar Centre.

During my years as Commissioner, I had the pleasure of bringing Sam Biasucci and his group into the league. I have never worked with a better person and one with such commitment to keeping the league alive and viable. I hated to see him leave but the Hounds were waiting. I thank Sam for the good years.
