Charly Murray is back scouting

An old bird dog has returned to the Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League scouting scene.

Charly Murray, who has an association with the NOJHL that dates back more than 20 years, has joined the reigning champion Soo Thunderbirds as a special assignment scout.

Murray, appearing on the Hockey North Show that I host on Tuesdays from 5-6 p.m. on ESPN 1400 Radio, confirmed his return to the NOJHL and the Thunderbirds in a volunteer capacity.

A retired steelworker, Murray said he met with Thunderbirds president-director of hockey operations Kevin Cain at a recent NOJHL game and the two hashed out a verbal agreement.

“I love the scouting aspect of the game and being involved with a team in the development of players,” said Murray. “I am excited to be working with Kevin and the Thunderbirds and helping out with the scouting.”

Murray’s most-recent NOJHL scouting gig was with the Cochrane Crunch but he stepped down from that position because of the distance from his Sault Ste. Marie home.

This will be Murray’s third stint with the Thunderbirds and continues a lengthy link with the NOJHL.

Besides the Thunderbirds and Cochrane, Murray has also scouted for the Soo Eagles, Blind River Beavers and the erstwhile Elliot Lake Bobcats, Northern Michigan Black Bears and Parry Sound Shamrocks.
