Crunch making its own noise

Soo Thunderbirds may be the toast of the Canadian Jr. Hockey League but their Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League counterparts, the Cochrane Crunch, is having a sparkling season of its own.

While the Thunderbirds are the top-ranked team in the latest CJHL poll, the Crunch is no. 10 in the nation.

In fact, with the Powassan Voodoos ranked 15th, the NOJHL has three teams in the CJHL’s Top 20, which is quite the accomplishment for the northern league.

As the Soo leads the NOJHL’s overall standings with 69 points from a record of 34-3-1, small-market Cochrane is in second place with 62 points from a 29-6-4 record.

Regarded as one of the best — if not the best recruiter — in the NOJHL, Crunch owner-general manager-coach Ryan Leonard is the main man in charge of team operations up in Cochrane.

Known for his passion, intensity, work ethic and relentless approach to building a successful franchise on and off the ice, Leonard deserves kudos for the work that he and his assembly have done in just their second year in Cochrane.
