EL Wings & Barrie Colts
Elliot Lake Red Wings recently completed their second season as members of the Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League. And as an aim of the franchise is to try to develop and advance players for the Major Junior, American Collegiate Hockey Association and National Collegiate Athletic Association ranks, Elliot Lake owner Paul Noad has established a new non-exclusive arrangement to collaborate with the Barrie Colts of the Ontario Hockey League.
Noad told Hockey News North that the arrangement with Barrie is designed to develop players targeting OHL opportunities based on his hockey history with Colts general manager and head coach Marty Williamson.
“We are very fortunate and appreciative that Marty and the Barrie Colts have given us this opportunity,” Noad relayed to Hockey News North. “This is huge for the Red Wings and our un-drafted players and hopefully the Colts can benefit as well.”
Noad noted that Elliot Lake “will continue to support and develop OHL drafted players like Braeden Vis (Niagara Ice Dogs) Adam Matar (Flint Firebirds) and any newcomers that may end up with us come the 2023-2024 season.”
The Red Wings already have a history of sending players to OHL camps as free agents. Last fall, skaters Cameron Dial, Alex Antoine and Silas Crawford went to the London Knights main camp while Sam Noad went to Barrie’s camp. And goalie Cameron Smith was invited to the Kingston Frontenacs camp.
SCHOOL
One of Elliot Lake’s 20-year old graduates has received a college commitment for the fall and another has an offer. Goalie Sean Guerin is headed to Southern New Hampshire University, which is a Division 3, National Collegiate Athletic Association school. And defenseman Ethan Mercer has a commitment offer from the Sault College Cougars of the Division 2, American Collegiate Hockey Association.
TRYOUT CAMP
