Dudley-Hewitt Cup winding up
It’s down to two games to decide the winner of the Dudley-Hewitt Cup, Central Canada Tournament with three of four teams still in the running for the junior A hockey championship.
Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League champion Soo Thunderbirds will face off against the host Kirkland Lake Gold Miners in tonight’s semi-final match. The winner will meet the Ontario Jr. Hockey League champion Trenton Golden Hawks for the DHC title on Saturday night.
The Thunderbirds are the defending DHC champs.
With the Soo playing Kirkland Lake in tonight’s semi-final and Trenton guaranteed a spot in Saturday’s final, the Superior International Jr. Hockey League champion Fort Frances Lakers are out of contention after losing all three games during the round-robin portion of the tournament.
Good luck to the Soo Thunderbirds, I heard my buddy Jason Fortier was there doing some scouting.
Jason Fortier is on the Rouyn Noranda coaching staff which happens to be playing in the QMJAL Finals. Good for him if he indeed made the 2 hour round trip.
You can count the wins that the Kirking lake had against a SooThunderbirds on one hand but if the refereeing stays the same as last nights game Kirking lake has a very good chance of moving forward only because of the refereeing . In last nights game Kirking lick at 20 minutes of penalties and Sue Thunderbirds had 41 . Anyone there could see the missed calls by the referees something should be done .
Gotta be the worse example of officiating I have ever witnessed. The TBIRDS are getting the shaft, call after call.
Never expected the Fort Frances Lakers to tank like that. I was hoping a strong performance from the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners, but I knew they were going to be a bit weaker after losing to the Soo in 4 games. I knew the Trenton Golden Hawks were going to have a strong tournament. The OJHL has pretty much dominated the Dudley-Hewitt Cup winning it 9 times since they introduced the round-robin format in 2002. At first the OJHL wanted no part of it, and in the end they’re winning it almost every year.
In fact, the last 4 years has seen the OJHL win the Dudley just once.
