Eagles have defensive Powers

He may not be the Soo Eagles best defenseman but Roger Powers is one of the most-improved players on the Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League team.

A 6-foot-1, 180-pound rookie, Powers has played in 48 of the Eagles 51 games thus far this season and his advancement has been notable.

“He’s definitely improved a lot,” Eagles co-coach/general manager Bruno Bragagnolo said of Powers, who hails from Pittsford, New York. “I would say that he is one of our most-improved players.”

Powers has made the jump to the Eagles and the NOJHL this season from the under-18 AAA Syracuse Stars of the U.S. Premier Hockey League.

And with a 1997 birth date, the lanky defender still has two seasons of junior eligibility remaining after this one.

Through the 48 games that he has played with the Eagles, Powers has 2 goals, 3 assists, 5 points from his defense position.

“We like the way he is developing,” added Bragagnolo. “He needs to get stronger but we see the improvement in him.”

As the NOJHL regular season winds down, the Eagles play a home-and-home series with their arch-rival Soo Thunderbirds with games tonight at Pullar Stadium and Saturday evening at the Essar Centre.

What you think about “Eagles have defensive Powers”

  1. Ist player on ice every practice, and last player off every practice. Works real hard everyday and has great attitude

  2. Every time we have crossed the river to watch the T-Birds Powers has stood out as one of the Eagle’s top d-men; he is a physical, and always makes a nice 1st pass out of the zone, and IMO he plays with a lot of composure. Hope this kid is back next year for the Eagles, he is a force on the blue line for them.

Great crowd and atmosphere once again at the Pullar for last nights Eagles vs. T-Birds. Unfortunate to see Helmuth (sic) get a game.

  3. RR – keep looking around the league and you find that 1997 rookie Stuart Harley led the IFalls d-men with 25 points this past season – and he was Power’s partner on the blue line in Syracuse last season.
