Eagles take it to the limit
Fourth-place Soo Eagles continue to save their best for the first-place Soo Thunderbirds.
In a Friday night thriller before more than 850 frenzied fans at Pullar Stadium in the Michigan Soo, Chris Murphy flashed a highlight-reel goal in the final minute of overtime to give the Eagles a dramatic 3-2 triumph over the Thunderbirds.
The win was the third for the Eagles in five outings against the Thunderbirds this season.
The victory lifted the Eagles into fourth place in the West Division of the Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League with 20 points from a record of 9-13-2. The Thunderbirds remain in first place in the West with 31 points from a record of 15-6-1.
A last-minute, third-period goal by Mark Tassone of the Thunderbirds forced OT on Friday and set the stage for Murphy’s spectacular, end-to-end rush, game-winner — his 14th marker of the season.
Landon Hubbard and Jake Palmerio had scored earlier goals for the Eagles. Rookie Keegan Stevenson had the other Thunderbird goal.
Kade Phipps improved his record to 4-2-0 by making 31 saves for the Eagles. Phipps has a 2.79 goals against average and .914 save percentage and has solidified the Eagles net-minding since joining them from the Alberta Jr. Hockey League last month.
