This looms as a feel good story.

Speedy forward Phillipe Daoust, who skated for the French River Rapids of the Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League as a rookie during the 2018-2019 season, has become a National Hockey League draft pick.

The 6-foot, 165 pound Daoust, who has a November, 2001 birth date, was a surprise pick of the Ottawa Senators in the sixth round of today’s NHL draft.

Daoust netted 20 goals, 39 assists, 59 points for the small market, French River NOJHL team during the 2018-2019 campaign.

After attending the Ontario Hockey League prospect development camp of the Sudbury Wolves without being signed, Daoust then made the Moncton Wildcats of the Quebec Major Jr. Hockey League as a free agent walk on before the start of the 2019-2020 season. He went on to score seven goals, 22 assists, 29 points with the New Brunswick-based Wildcats as a rookie in the QMJHL.

To that end, NOJHL commissioner Robert Mazzuca was thrilled about the NHL drafting of Daoust.

“This is a tremendous honour for Philippe, the French River Rapids and the entire Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League,” relayed the NOJHL’s commander in chief.

“It just goes to show you, that if you work hard, get an opportunity to showcase your talents, great things can happen.

“For a fairly recent Jr. A franchise, like French River, to have one of its latest alumni be drafted by an NHL team, it continues to bode well for our league,” added Mazzuca.
