1999 birth-year defenseman Nolan Makkonen, who signed with the Guelph Storm via the Soo Eagles of the Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League on January 9, has his first Ontario Hockey League goal.

The 6-foot, 183-pound Makkonen found the back of the net in Guelph’s 4-2 road win over the Windsor Spitfires this afternoon. Ironically, Makkonen’s first OHL goal came against Spitfires goalie Mario Culina, who is a fellow Sault Ste. Marie native.

Makkonen now has 1 goal, 1 assist, 2 points in 6 OHL games with Guelph.

The Storm selected Makkonen in the ninth round of the 2015 OHL draft on the recommendation of its Sault Ste. Marie-based scout Jimmy Mancuso.

A strong kid with a good right-handed shot, Makkonen had been a steady and dependable defenseman with the Eagles of the Soo through 34 games of this 2016-2017 NOJHL season before moving up to the OHL with Guelph. He had 1 goal, 3 assists, 4 points with the Eagles.
