The Western Collegiate Hockey Association held its annual media teleconference today and Lake Superior State University Lakers freshman defenceman Owen Headrick — a former standout with the reigning Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League champion Soo Thunderbirds — received a mention.

First up, during his segment, second-year Laker coach Damon Whitten spoke about the different look his team will have this 2015-2016 season and the expectations it has as a group.

“For us, our success will be determined on the back end and how well (sophomore goaltender) Gordie Defiel comes prepared for this season,” said Whitten.

After finishing ninth in the standings and making their first-ever trip to the WCHA quarter-finals in 2014-2015, the Lakers were chosen to finish tenth in the 2015-2016 standings by the coaches in a poll conducted by the Mankato Free Press.

A trio of freshmen Lakers were recognized by the league’s coaches and media as vote-getters for the pre-season, WCHA rookie of the year award, including Headrick, a 1997 birth-date defender who hails from Garden River First Nation.

Headrick is the youngest player on the LSSU roster.

The Lakers will open the 2015-2016 season with a Blue v. Gold scrimmage on Saturday, Oct. 3 at 3:07 p.m. Then, on Sunday, Oct. 4 the Lakers will play host to an exhibition contest at 5:07 p.m. against USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program’s under-18 squad.
