Hockey-related performance training

Jeff Coccimiglio has initiated a performance training for hockey players using a program that extracts the movement which the players use in a game.

“This gives the players repetition and allows them to develop more explosion, strength, balance, and co-ordination on their skates,” Coccimiglio said of the drill format.

Coccimiglio, who is the owner-instructor of Sault Ste. Marie based-JC Training, has an athletic and academic background from the University of Windsor.

His performance-training program is offered in both one-on-one and group/team sessions.

Coccimiglio explained the focus and methods used in his training.

“Performance programs focus on using a player’s body weight with resistance equipment. This type of training is most-effective when introduced at a young age, say between 9 and 14, when a player’s muscles are in the primary development stage,” he told HockeyNewsNorth.com.

Repetition and focus are key components, said Coccimiglio.

“Unfortunately, many of my clients in the past have come to me and struggled with the basic fundamental movements. Much of this is attributed to the fact that they were not given the repetition and focus of these movements at a young age and now are trying to play catch up. By age 15 and older, a player should be focusing on advance performance movements,” Coccimiglio pointed out.

The 27-year old Coccimiglio, who played in pro soccer competition overseas and who still plays men’s hockey, offers a variety of programs.

“I offer one-on-one and group training and what I hope coaches and teams will take advantage of is my team training program. This is a great opportunity to allow me to focus on players physical development and for the coaches to give their undivided attention to their players skill development,” noted Coccimiglio.

One player who Coccimiglio just started to train one-on-one is Izaak Del Mastro, a 6-foot-5, 20-year old forward with the Soo Thunderbirds of the Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League.

“Izaak has been a great player to work with and is very dedicated to developing the physical skills that will give him an extra edge in his game,” Coccimiglio said of Del Mastro. “Izaak understands that when you want to play at a higher level of competition, there becomes a fine line that will determine if a player makes a team or not. Many players have a lot of the same skills to offer, so in Izaak’s case, he is working hard to try to give himself that extra edge that will put him over that line.”
