Jamie Henderson, who helped the Soo Thunderbirds of the Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League to three championships in a five-year span — first as assistant coach, then as assistant general manager and then as general manager — has secured another high-level position in the sport.

HockeyNewsNorth.com has learned that Henderson will join the staff of the Lake Superior State University Lakers of the Division 1, Western Collegiate Hockey Association.

Along with others, Henderson was not retained by the new owners of the Thunderbirds, The Tech 1921 Ltd., following the Soo team’s 2015-2016 NOJHL championship.

In moving on to LSSU, Henderson will work as a video coach and head up hockey operations for the Lakers under third-year head coach Damon Whitten.

Not short on self-confidence, Henderson also carries a reputation as a tireless worker who pays attention to detail. He has also been involved in a number of hockey-related community projects that assist under-privileged youth in the Sault Ste. Marie area.

As a member of the hockey Lakers, Henderson will be reunited with standout defenceman Owen Headrick.

Headrick starred with the Thunderbirds for two years before moving up to the Lakers last fall and going on to have a splendid season as a 1997 birth-year freshman.

  1. Lssu grooming Henderson to take Rich Metro’s job, I understand Damon Whiten was forced to take Metro on his staff by Lssu Athletics.
