More power to Powassan

Powassan Voodoos are living up to lofty expectations through six games of the 2015-2016 Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League season.

While it is but a matter of time before the Voodoos actually do lose a game, the fact of the current matter is that Powassan is the only undefeated team in the 12-member NOJHL.

A win over Cochrane on Monday that improved Powassan’s record to 6-0 also bumped the Crunch from the ranks of the undefeated.

To be sure, I am not surprised by the success that the Voodoos have had thus far.

I followed the many moves made by Voodoos general manager Chris Dawson over the course of the off-season and wrote up the addition and return of multiple impact players.

The 46-year old Dawson — who is a well-known print, photo and video journalist in the North Bay area — is proving to be a very shrewd and thorough individual in his secondary career as a junior hockey operator.

As due credit is given to Voodoos coach Scott Wray, props of a supportive nature are also extended to team ownership for providing a framework from which Dawson as general manager has shown the ability to operate within.

Looking at the Powassan on-ice product that Dawson has put together, the strength and depth of the roster stands out.

Three forwards — Tyler Peters, Steve Harland and Michael Silveri — have 11 points apiece.

Two defencemen — Nicky Grose and Christian Whitcomb — have 7 points each.

Both goalies — Mario Cavaliere and Garrett Forrest — have a record of 3-0, save percentage above .900 and goals against average below 3.00.

Heck, Nathaniel McLeod and Jake Staples are both averaging a point-per-game and are sixth on the team in scoring.

Championships are not won in September.

But construction on championship-caliber teams begins in May.

What you think about “More power to Powassan”

  1. Sep 20th Soo T-Birds send Andrew Barbeau to Chatham Maroons;
Sep 29th Chatham sends Andrew Babeau to Soo T-Birds.

There’s gotta be a storey behind this. LOL

  2. The Voodoos have been fun to watch this year. Chris Dawson has done a great job. The Voodoos are solid, but to win in the NOJHL you have to be solid.

    Go Voodoos Go.

  3. I have been watching this team closely and am very impressed.
This is a special team. Well disciplined, well coached, well put together.
You have extremely skilled big players to compliment hard working gritty smaller players. The goaltending is clutch , the D corps super effective at both ends of the rink. If you can throw Gray and McLeod out on the 3rd line…Wow Depth!!!!

Good luck Voodoos. You are going far this season. Maybe Alberta far.

  4. Goals are proving to be hard to come by for the Battalion in the early going, so there is often mention of Steve Harland in the stands at the Gardens but as most people understand it, Harland wants to retain his NCAA eligibility. The Voodoos wouldn’t want to give him up anyway but his knack of finding the net could be useful for the Troops.

  5. glad to see players that i steered to powasson steve harland nicky grose christian whitcomb daniel golba nicksiracuse noah bennatt all making impact good for u powasson best of luck to guys i rep
