Here and there in the Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League as the 2016-2017 regular season heads into its third week:

BABY BIRDS

A pair of young forwards are leading the way for the two-time defending champion Soo Thunderbirds, who despite an almost-complete roster overhaul, are off to an impressive 4-1-0 start atop the West Division.

Mark Tassone, who had a solid showing as a free-agent invite to the Ontario Hockey League main camp of the defending Memorial Cup champion London Knights, is leading the Thunderbirds with 6 goals, 3 assists, 9 points in 5 games.

And Zach Senecal, who was a 2014 OHL draft pick of the Oshawa Generals, has 7 goals in 5 games for the Thunderbirds to start the season.

Tassone has a 1999 birth date while Senecal was born in 1998.

NEW TO RAYSIDE

Rayside-Balfour Canadians have acquired the rights to power forward Evan Krassey from Fort Erie of the Greater Ontario Jr. Hockey League.

Krassey has played 50 games at the major junior level, including time spent with the Niagara IceDogs and Hamilton Bulldogs of the OHL and the Gatineau Olympiques of the Quebec Major Jr. Hockey League.

Rayside has also added another big forward in Ian Robbie, obtaining him from the French River Rapids.

CHARLY PRIDE

After winning just 10 games and missing the playoffs in 2015-2016, Blind River Beavers are off to a 3-1-0 start to the 2016-2017 campaign.

And Beavers senior advisor and scouting director Charly Murray said he “couldn’t be more proud” of the job that rookie head coach Kyle Brick and his staff are doing.

Murray, who has an association with the NOJHL that dates back multiple decades, was appearing on the most-recent edition of the Hockey North Show, which airs on Tuesdays from 5-6 p.m. on ESPN 1400 Radio.

“It hasn’t take Kyle very long to help restore a pride that has been missing on the hockey side of the Beavers for a long time now,” praised Murray. “I couldn’t be happier to once again have an association with the great fans, executive, staff and all the volunteers who assist the Beavers.”
