Parrott flies like an Eagle

He can skate, he can shoot, he can play a rough-and-tumble style and he is a favourite of his coach because of the way he plays the game.

Zack Parrott, a 1997 birth-year defenseman with the Soo Eagles, has made a significant impact as a Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League rookie.

In just 28 games with the Eagles this season, the 6-foot, 175-pounder has 3 goals, 13 assists, 16 points and 47 penalty minutes.

Eagles co-coach/general manager Bruno Bragagnolo can’t say enough about Parrott, who is a product of the Detroit Little Caesars AAA program.

“He’s like a coach’s dream,” Bragagnolo said of Parrott. “He’s a skilled player with a high hockey IQ who plays hard every shift. He’s a kid who is getting looks from the (National Collegiate Athletic Association) Division 1 schools.”

Parrott, who is currently sidelined with a concussion after being checked into the boards during a recent game with the Soo Thunderbirds, said he is impressed with the caliber of play in the NOJHL and definitely has aspirations of moving up the hockey ladder.

“I didn’t know much about the league until I got here,” said Parrott, while guesting on a recent edition of ESPN Radio’s Hockey North Show. “But I am glad I came up here to play. It’s been good for my development.”

With two years of junior eligibility remaining after this one, Parrott realizes that a potential spot at an NCAA school may be a few seasons way. And while he would like to play in the North American Hockey League next season — he is expected to receive a tender offer from the New Jersey Titans — Parrott said he “would have no problem” returning to the NOJHL.

In the meantime, Parrott is eyeing a return to the Eagles lineup once he is medically cleared to play.

“We’re hoping Zack is ready for the playoffs if not before,” said Bragagnolo. “He tells us that he’s feeling a lot better.”
