Personal goals within reach

As a team, Soo Thunderbirds have clinched first place in the Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League standings and will be the no. 1 seed when the playoffs get underway next week.

But the Thunderbirds still have two games to play in the regular season — on home ice this Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m. — and there are players who are within milestones.

With 47 goals thus far this season, captain Gavin Burbach needs to score three times this weekend to reach the coveted 50 mark.

Burbach, a 1993 birth-year forward who is in his fourth NOJHL season, admitted that hitting the 50-goal plateau would be “sweet.

“We do things as a team but with first place clinched it would be awesome for me personally to be able to score 50 goals,” Burbach relayed on the Thunderbird Hockey Show, which airs on Wednesdays at 5 p.m. on ESPN 1400 Radio.

Three other Thunderbird forwards may also have goals in mind.

Anthony Miller is closing in on 30 while Nic Tassone and Joey Miller have shots at 20.

With the two games to play, Anthony Miller has 29 goals, Tassone has 18 and Joey Miller has 17.

What you think about “Personal goals within reach”

  1. I must give props to the Tbirds and their exceptional season……good luck to those players looking to reach personal milestones and the rest of the team, from a Rivermen fan!

  2. Yep good luck to Burbach that would be good for him. Also good luck to the Millers and Tassone. Good luck in the playoffs to also from an Espo boy

  3. The Tbird organization is a model for ALL CJHL clubs.
And to do it with largely local players is a testament to Soo Minor Hockey.
