Rock upsets CC champs
WASAGA BEACH — Henry McLellan scored the winner via the shootout to lift the Timmins Rock of the Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League to a stunning 2-1 victory over the defending Centennial Cup champion Collingwood Blues of the Ontario Jr. Hockey League at the Cottage Cup Showcase.
While the Blues generated the majority of chances in the first frame, it was the Rock who picked up the game’s initial tally by converting on the power play. On the marker, defenseman and team captain Tenzin Nyman pumped a point shot to the target, then saw Ryan Armitage snag and stuff in a puck that eluded Collingwood netminder Mikhael Kingo.
In the second stanza, Collingwood tied it early when Vincent Gazquez neatly redirected a Nolan Egleton attempt from the right side past Timmins goalie Dryden Riley.
Neither side would connect the rest of regulation, thus sending it to extra attempts to determine a winner. There, McLellan clicked on his opportunity while Riley stymied all three Blues’ shooters to secure the upset victory.
With the result, Timmins finishes 1-1-1 in round robin play and will next face the Leamington Flyers of the OJHL as playoff action begins today.
Great to see the NOJHL can complete with the south 👍
