Soo Eagles are tops of new teams

Two of the Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League’s first-year teams will face off tonight when the Espanola Express plays host to the Soo Eagles.

Though Espanola and the Michigan Soo both have a considerable NOJHL history, the 2015-2016 season has marked a return to the league for both towns.

The Express and the Eagles, along with the French River Rapids, all started from scratch when granted expansion franchises prior to the 2015-2016 campaign.

To date, the Eagles have the best record of the three with 27 points from a record of 13-20-1. Espanola has 17 points from a record of 8-27-1 while French River is at the bottom of the NOJHL standings with 3 points in 36 games.

And while the Michiganders are in eighth place overall in the 12-team NOJHL, the Eagles top the league’s attendance chart with a per-game average of 604 clicking the turnstiles at venerable Pullar Stadium.
