Soo Thunderbirds have added a small-but-speedy centre to their roster.

Thunderbirds general manager Kevin Cain has confirmed that the Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League team has signed 1997 birth-year pivot Matt Caruso.

Caruso, who is listed at 5-foot-8, 145 pounds, played with the Soo Thunder minor midgets in 2012-2013 before leaving home to skate for the major midget Waterloo Wolves in 2013-2014.

In what was an impressive season with Waterloo, Caruso had 18 goals, 28 assists, 46 points in 32 games.

He is the younger brother of Michael Caruso, a 1995 birth-year defenceman who played for the Soo Eagles of the North American Hockey League in 2013-2014.

What you think about “Soo Thunderbirds sign a speedster”

  1. And congratulations also to Spencer MacLean of Maple, ON, the first signing of the Elliot Lake Wildcats.

  2. I don’t mean to be rude but: Who the hell are the Elliot Lake Wildcats??? Did I miss something???

  3. I see that Ryan Leonard and the Cochrane Crunch have announced the resigning of goalie Matt Young . Good for both sides , hope they have a good year .

  4. RR, or any one out there .. any News about where Oscar Cloutier is going now that he has left the Nickel Barons?

  5. Re: Matt Young, re-signing with Cochrane.

I am not going to get into a war of words with the “writer” from another site who said my item about Matt not wanting to return to Cochrane was “false.”

Let me just say that I have kept the e-mail from Matt and what he said about not wanting to play in Cochrane for coach Ryan Leonard.

I know what it says in the e-mail. And so does Matt.

  6. Randy: I thought you had reported somewhere that it was Matt’s “advisor” that informed you of his intentions. No?

  7. Re: Matt Young, re-signing with Cochrane.

I would not expect you to get in a war of words with anybody Randy . In these cases with the 20 year old player emotions can run high and when the expectations change things are said . Whatever happened between the parties has been rectified and a young man has an agreement to play hockey this fall . Good luck to both Matt and the Crunch .

    1. Mike Bowman,

For the record, I have kept what Matt relayed via e-mail about not wanting to play in the NOJHL or for coach Ryan Leonard.

If Matt has had a change of heart, so be it, that is his right.

What I don’t like is other sites jumping to the conclusion that I printed a story that was “false.” Let’s just say that Matt and his agent both know that I did not print anything that was “false.”

      Regards,

      RR

  8. The question is How long will Goalie Matt Young be with Cochrane? This makes 3 goalies signed with Cochrane and that is from Coach Lenard to one of the former Bobcats Players who is going to Cochrane.
I dont know if the new Elliot Lake Wildcats will try and trade to get Matty Young I hope so because we need Players. As for Coach Lenard now in Cochrane we wil wait and see how long it wil take the fan’s up there to find out whether to beleeve what he says or not. Maybe I am just bitter but we shal see.

  9. Randy,
I hadn’t actually read the article regarding this topic just the headline ,when I posted here . I understand how you wouldn’t like the way the other sites called your story into question . My intent wasn’t to create any ill will . I had read your previous article and just intended an update because for whatever reason things had apparently changed between the parties . Have a great long weekend and if you are heading to the Eagles camp enjoy the hockey ,

  10. Just read that Zane Neily has stepped down as the coach of the Mattawa Blackhawks . Interesting development this close to camp .
