Top-seeded Soo Thunderbirds will play host to the Elliot Lake Wildcats in Game 1 of a best-of-seven, Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League semi-final playoff.

The series opener is set for Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at the Essar Centre in Sault Ste. Marie.

An expansion team, Elliot Lake finished third overall in the nine-team NOJHL during the regular season behind first-place Soo and second-ranked Kirkland Lake Gold Miners.

The defending champions from Kirkland Lake lost in the first round of the playoffs in a stunning upset at the hands of the seventh-place Powassan Voodoos.

The Thunderbirds are fresh from a lopsided, opening-round sweep of the Blind River Beavers.

The Wildcats took the measure of the Sudbury Nickel Barons in six games in the opening round.

During the regular season, the Soo and Elliot Lake split 10 games with five wins apiece.

Upstart Powassan will play the Cochrane Crunch in the other NOJHL semi-final.

What you think about “Thunderbirds v. Wildcats”

  1. One down for birdies. They have themselves too much depth for the Cats who only have 2 lines and a foursome behind. 6 games and Birdies triumph
