T-Bird camp begins today

The defending regular-season champs from the Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League will hold a weekend camp beginning today at 5 p.m. at John Rhodes Community Centre.

With between 12 and 15 skaters slated to return from the 2013-2014 edition of the NOJHL team plus five signed newcomers, Soo Thunderbirds general manager Kevin Cain said a few roster spots for the 2014-2015 campaign remain open.

Among the seasoned performers who are eligible to line up for the Thunderbirds again this season are goalie Brian Kment, defencemen Brandon Grandinetti, Owen Headrick, Shane Snow, Jeremy Solomon and forwards Anthony Miller, Jaren Bellini, Riley Bordin, Nathan Hebert, Grant Syrette, Nic Tassone et al.

Five new players who have commitments to play for coach Jordan Smith and the Thunderbirds this season are goalie Mario Culina, defencemen Alex Morin and Matt Murray and forwards Matt Caruso and Matt Pinder.

Before the start of the NOJHL regular season, the Thunderbirds will venture across the International Bridge to Pullar Stadium for a pair of exhibition games with the Soo Eagles of the North American Hockey League that are slated for Friday, September 5 and Saturday, September 6.
