T-Birds need a Good Friday

Simply put, Soo Thunderbirds are in need of a victory tonight.

The regular-season champions lost 4-3 in overtime to Kirkland Lake Gold Miners on Thursday night and trail the best-of-seven, Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League championship series two games to one.

Tonight’s Game 4 is scheduled to start at 7:30 at Joe Mavrinac Community Complex in Kirkland Lake.

More than 900 spectators took in Thursday’s see-saw sizzler in Kirkland, highlights of which were the Soo knotting the game with 11 seconds left in the third period before Austin Rust won it for the Gold Miners at the 4:40 mark of overtime.

The Soo outshot Kirkland Lake 31-24 with Jeremy Pominville steering aside 28 shots for the win.

Eight minor penalties were called in the game, six of which went against the Soo.

Game 5 in the set is slated for Sunday night at 7:30 at the Essar Centre in Sault Ste. Marie.
