T-Birds take title tilt opener
Gavin Burbach scored just past the five-minute mark of the second overtime period to lift Soo Thunderbirds to a 2-1 victory over Kirkland Lake Gold Miners in Game 1 of the best-of-seven, Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League championship series Saturday night at the Essar Centre.
Game 2 goes tonight at 7:30, also at the Essar.
Through more than 85 minutes of play, the Soo outshot visiting Kirkland Lake by a 42-34 margin with Brian Kment winning his ninth straight playoff game of the post-season in the Thunderbird net.
