This gives definite meaning to the regular season.

The first-and-second-place teams in the Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League will face off in a best-of-seven championship series.

Top-seeded Soo Thunderbirds and second-ranked Kirkland Lake Gold Miners have both moved on to the third-and-final round of the NOJHL playoffs.

Both teams completed second-round sweeps on Thursday with the Soo ousting the Abitibi Eskimos and Kirkland Lake sending the Espanola Rivermen packing.

The Soo now has a record of 8-1 during the playoffs, having defeated the Blind River Beavers four games to one in the opening round.

Kirkland Lake, meanwhile, is unbeaten in the post-season, having swept the North Bay Trappers in the opening round.
