Voodoos, T-Birds keep winning

Masked by the fact that the Powassan Voodoos have won 20 straight games is that the two-time reigning champion Soo Thunderbirds have reeled off eight successive victories.

Right now, Powassan and the Soo are first and second overall in the 12-team Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League.

The Voodoos, with their 20 wins in a row, have 55 points from a record of 27-3-1.

The Thunderbirds, with their eight wins in a row, have 47 points from a record of 23-7-1.

This is a season that Powassan general manager Chris Dawson has been building to with the Voodoos in only their third year of existence. Give credit to my man Dawson and Voodoos head coach Scott Wray for having such a big impact in a small market.

And as the winning continues in puck-town Powassan, this was supposed to be a rebuild season in the Soo.

The Thunderbirds were not supposed to be as good as they have been.

Critics pointed to the departures of long-time Thunderbird hockey boss Kevin Cain and high-end assistant coaches Kyle Brick and Jeremy Rebek — not to mention a dozen players from last season’s title team — as to why the winning formula in the Soo was about to run out.

But holdover head coach Jordan Smith has responded to being given added responsibility as general manager and lo and behold the Thunderbirds are once again a serious NOJHL contender.

It was during the summer months that words were that Smith was so far in over his head as coach and general manager that the Thunderbirds might have difficulty icing a team let alone a contending one.

Well, here we are, past the halfway point of the 2016-2017 NOJHL season and the only team with more wins than the Thunderbirds are the Voodoos.

Go figure.

What you think about “Voodoos, T-Birds keep winning”

  1. It will be Powassan and Soo in the NOJHL championship. At the DHC, it’s gonna be hosts Trenton Golden Hawks, OJHL champ/runner-up Georgetown Raiders, SIJHL champ Thunder Bay North Stars, and the NOJHL champ Powassan Voodoos.
