Saginaw Spirit of the Ontario Hockey League is in the news again, this time relative to a rookie player from northern Ontario.

A few days after hiring Spencer Carbery as their new head coach, the Spirit has confirmed the commitment of 2016 third-round draft pick Damien Giroux for the 2016-2017 season.

A slick centre, the 16-year old Giroux led the Sudbury Wolves AAA minor midgets in scoring in 2015-2016 with 28 goals, 41 assists, 69 points in 42 games.

A 5-foot-9, 165-pound speedster, Giroux hails from the Greater Sudbury Area town of Val Caron.

“By adding Giroux to the core we have moving forward, we feel we are headed in the right direction and look forward to seeing Damien progress his career with the Spirit,” said Saginaw general manager Dave Drinkill.

Of note, Giroux becomes the first member of the 2016 draft class to sign with the Spirit, which finished in eighth place in the OHL’s Western Conference in ’15-16 before losing in the first round of the playoffs to the Erie Otters.
