14-round shootout marathon

There are quick-end shootouts to decide games and then there was a 14-round, 28-shooter marathon that finally determined Wednesday’s Ontario Hockey League match between the Ottawa 67’s and the visiting Kingston Frontenacs.

When it was all over, 67’s defenseman Kyle Auger emerged as the shootout hero with a 14th-round marker that gave Ottawa a much-needed 5-4 win over Kingston.

The 14-round shootout tied an OHL record for the second-longest in league history dating back to 2008.

The league record remains at 38 shooters from a 2012 game between London and Mississauga.

As Auger — who hails from the northwestern Ontario hockey hub of Thunder Bay — scored the game winner for Ottawa, rookie goalie Olivier Lafreniere stood tall in the 67’s net by stopping 13 of 14 shootout attempts.

The win for Ottawa ended a four-game losing streak and moved the seventh-seeded 67’s four points ahead of the eighth-place North Bay Battalion and Niagara IceDogs in the Eastern Conference playoff race.
