Soo Eagles of the Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League have signed free-agent left winger Gordie Helmuth, who was a 10th-round pick of the Soo Greyhounds at the 2012 Ontario Hockey League draft.

A 6-foot, 180-pounder, Helmuth joins the Michigan-based Eagles after spending parts of the past two seasons with the Lone Star Brahmas of the North American Hockey League, the Philadelphia Little Flyers of the Eastern Hockey League and Detroit Little Caesars of the High Performance Hockey League.

Helmuth, who hails from the Detroit suburb of Royal Oak, has a 1996 birth-date and is known for his hockey smarts and toughness, according to Eagles coach-general manager Bruno Bragagnolo.

“We did our homework on Gordie and we are happy to have him join us,” Bragagnolo told HockeyNewsNorth.com. “With his experience and ability, we think that he will be a top player for us as the season goes on. He plays an OHL-style game.”
