Goodwin leaving OHL Frontenacs
Well-respected assistant coach John Goodwin will not be returning to the Kingston Frontenacs of the Ontario Hockey League for a third season, multiple sources have told HockeyNewsNorth.com.
The 54-year old Goodwin is leaving the Frontenacs on his own terms and is looking to remain in the OHL, according to the sources. Goodwin’s contract with the Frontenacs reportedly expires in August.
Prior to joining the Frontenacs in 2014, Goodwin was an assistant coach with the OHL’s North Bay Battalion for one season. He departed North Bay for Kingston to be closer to his Greater Toronto Area home, where his wife and family reside.
Goodwin had returned to the OHL coaching ranks with North Bay in 2013 after retiring from Ontario Power Generation. Years earlier, he was an assistant coach then a head coach for the OHL’s Oshawa Generals while working for OPG.
A former OHL scoring champion from his days with the Soo Greyhounds, Goodwin is highly regarded as a coach for his knowledge of the game and for the way he relates to today’s player.
