Soo Greyhounds are moving towards the future. The trading of Team Canada world junior defenseman Andrew Gibson to the Oshawa Generals is a major indicator that the Greyhounds are looking more to time ahead than the present.

Brady T. Smith

Gibson, who has a 2005 birth date and is a signed National Hockey League prospect of the Nashville Predators, is poised to graduate to the pros after this ’24-25 Ontario Hockey League season. And in moving the proven product of the nearby Windsor town of LaSalle to Oshawa, the Greyhounds are getting some of now and more of what lies ahead in return.

Forward Brady T. Smith, who Oshawa took in the first round of the 2024 OHL priority selections draft, is the prize catch of the present for the Greyhounds. Smith, who has a 2008 birth date, had only two goals, five assists, seven points in 37 games for Oshawa at the time of the trade — but he still carries the tag of top prospect.

(Of note, the Hounds already had 2007 birth year forward Brady R. Smith on their roster before trading for Brady T. Smith.)

Meanwhile, Oshawa, which is in a frantic race with multiple other contenders for the lead in the Eastern Conference, paid big to get Gibson out of Sault Ste. Marie and the Western Conference. Not only did the Generals give up Smith but they parted with eight future draft picks — a second, a third, three fourths, two sixths and a seventh.

As for the Greyhounds, they are currently in position for a second losing season in three years under head coach John Dean. Which, to be sure, just might become a topic of conversation for another day.
