Greyhounds nip Spitfires
Marco Mignosa scored in the first minute of play and tallied again just past the 8:00 mark and the visiting Soo Greyhounds never trailed in upending the Windsor Spitfires 3-1 in a mid week Ontario Hockey League match.
The Spitfires proceeded to out shoot the Greyhounds 15-1 in the second period but could not beat goalie Landon Miller until the midway mark of the third when Ilya Protas tallied his 10th of the season. But overage forward Owen Allard put the game away for the Greyhounds with an empty net marker.
Miller stood tall with 31 saves in the Soo net while Spitfires ace Joey Costanzo blocked 18 of 20 shots and lost for the first time this season after nine straight wins.
It was the fifth straight victory for the Greyhounds, who started the ’24-25 season with three straight losses and had a 3-5-0 record before the current win streak. As for the Spitfires, the loss was their first on home ice this season. Windsor now has an overall record of 10-2-1 and the Soo is 8-5-0.
Both teams have busy weekends ahead.
The Greyhounds are in London on Friday night and at Flint on Saturday evening.
Meanwhile, the Spitfires have a home and home set with Flint. Windsor is at Flint on Friday night before returning home to play the Firebirds in a 4:05 p.m. Sunday afternoon match at the WFCU Center.
