Mangone makes his mark
It didn’t take Sault Ste. Marie product Calem Mangone very long to begin a statistical history with the Saginaw Spirit of the Ontario Hockey League.
A rookie forward with a 2004 birth date, Mangone earned an assist in his first regular season game in the OHL and then tallied his initial goal in a Saginaw uniform in his second career match as the Spirit split a two game opening weekend set with the visiting Erie Otters.
Given that the Spirit lost to Erie 4-2 before rebounding to beat the Otters 2-1, Mangone figured in on two of Saginaw’s four goals on the weekend.
After being bypassed at the 15 round, 2020 OHL priority selections draft, Mangone was a shrewd pick by Saginaw general manager Dave Drinkill in the first round, second overall, of the 2021 OHL under-18 draft.
A 5-foot-7, 160 pound pepper pot with skill and a nice scoring touch, Mangone enhanced his overall game over two years while under the watch of head coach Jamie Henderson of the Soo Jr. Greyhounds of the Great North Under 18 Hockey League.
