An improbable story continues. Sault Ste. Marie product Calem Mangone has achieved a significant landmark as a fourth year forward with the Saginaw Spirit of the Ontario Hockey League.

A 2004 birth year skater who is in his fourth full season with the Spirit, Mangone recently notched his 200th career regular season point in the OHL, doing so by netting a hat trick in a 10-7 Saginaw victory over the Guelph Storm.

Mangone’s milestone point — made up of 75 goals and 125 assists — came in his 223rd regular season game in the OHL, all with Saginaw. He has also skated in 33 post season games for Saginaw — playoffs and Memorial Cup tournament included — and has put up an additional seven goals, 12 assists, 19 points.

A poster boy for the underrated OHL supplemental draft, Mangone was nabbed by Saginaw general manager Dave Drinkill with the second overall choice of the 2021 proceedings from the Soo Jr. Greyhounds of the Great North Under 18 Hockey League.

The 5 foot 9, 165 pound Mangone has committed to play for the Lake Superior State University Lakers of the Division 1, National Collegiate Athletic Association effective the ’25-26 season. Lake State is located in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, directly across the International Bridge from his Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario hometown.
