North Bay Battalion forward Michael Amadio put the cap on a splendid four-year Ontario Hockey League career on Tuesday when he was named Sault Ste. Marie’s sportsperson-of-the-year.

The 20-year Amadio received the H.P. Broughton Trophy as part of the Rotary Club of Sault Ste. Marie’s 60th annual sports awards dinner, which was held at the Marconi Club.

Over his four-year OHL career with the Battalion, Amadio had 114 goals, 154 assists, 268 points, regular-season and playoffs included. During the 2015-2016 season alone, Amadio fired 62 goals and assisted on 54 others for 116 points.

Amadio is under pro contract to the Los Angeles Kings of the National Hockey League.

Having been recognized by the OHL at its awards presentation as a second team all-star on Tuesday in Toronto, Amadio could not make it back to the Soo in time for the Rotary sports dinner.

But Amadio’s mother, Bojana, represented her son and received the Soo sportsperson-of-the-year award on his behalf.

Through his mother, Amadio thanked North Bay owner Scott Abbott and Battalion coach-general manager Stan Butler “for four great years.” He also thanked his minor hockey coaches from the Soo, including his dad, Paul, and his major midget coach, Mike Hall.

In preparing to turn pro with the L.A. Kings organization, Amadio is well-prepared after four years of playing for the Butler-coached Battalion. Butler is widely recognized as one of the top major junior development coaches in all of Canada.
