One point down, 578 to go
Daylon Groulx has not only ascended to making his debut with the Owen Sound Attack after being a fourth-round draft pick this year but the 2000 birth-date forward has his first Ontario Hockey League goal and point.
Groulx’s fast-track promotion to the OHL came after he signed with Owen Sound in mid October and subsequently joined the Attack when centre Aidan Dudas left to play for Team Canada at the recently-concluded World Under-17 Hockey Challenge that was held in Sault Ste. Marie.
The 5-foot-11, 175-pound Groulx joined the Attack from the Fort Erie Meteors of the Greater Ontario Jr. Hockey League in late October and in his third game with Owen Sound — on Nov. 2 against the Barrie Colts — he scored his first OHL goal and point.
In total, Groulx has played in six OHL games for Owen Sound since joining the Attack from Fort Erie where he had 9 goals, 6 assists, 15 points in 10 outings for the Meteors.
To be sure, Groulx has the bloodlines to become a potential standout as the son of former Soo Greyhounds centre Wayne Groulx, who put up mind-boggling numbers during a spectacular four-year OHL career that ended in 1985.
Regular season and playoffs included, the elder Groulx scored 232 goals, 347 assists for an amazing 579 points in 328 career games as a Greyhound. His point totals rank third on the OHL’s all-time scoring list.
For whatever reason, the Greyhounds have yet to retire the no. 9 that Groulx wore during his four-year, record-setting OHL career that was spent entirely in the Soo.

I cannot beleive that the Hounds have not retired the # 9 of WAYNE GROULX > just look at those Stats. W.T.F.?
Come on Greyhounds – do the right thing!
To Wayne: Congratts on your sons 1st OHL Goal.
If the kid is as half as good as his Dad then he will be a star player in the O.H.L.
Totally Should Have his number Retired!
Groulx was one of my favourites too… For whatever reasons did not transpire into the nhl. I don’t think you can retire Junior club #’s as you can in pro hockey…where would you draw the line…mike kasycki was incredible when he played , Oliverio played great for 5 years , Kevin hodson 3 cup appearances and a star…we’d be retiring lots of numbers….
Howman,
Greyhounds have retired # 1 John Vanbiesbrouck, # 4 Craig Hartsburg, # 5 Chris Felix, #10 Ron Francis, # 99 Wayne Gretzky.
But not # 9 Wayne Groulx, the leading point-getter — by far — in franchise history.
Why not?
I am all for “HONOURING” former star players by hanging their sweaters in arenas,
but I have never liked the “RETIRED NUMBERS” idea, where no players can ever wear those numbers again.
Call me old-fashioned, but I miss seeing the great old numbers
like 2 – 3 – 4 – 5 – 9 – 10 etc. which are now almost absent from the NHL and so many other teams.
Can’t get used to the 40’s to 90’s numbers everywhere.
I hear you about the “high numbers”, RB. Your idea is more appealing — hang the sweaters of former stars in the rinks instead of retiring numbers.
Hi Randy,
Thank you for writing this wonderful article! I’m a very proud hockey Dad these days, my son has worked very hard to make the jump to the OHL. Hopefully one day soon a game for the Attack in the great hockey town of Sault Ste. Marie will be reason enough for making the trip up North. Also, thanks to you and your readers for the kind words about my very special time in the “Soo”, what a great place to play hockey… Daylon has heard quite a few hockey stories around the house and in the odd arena of my playing days in the early 80″s with the Greyhounds, I’m not too sure if he believes them all though… lol. Keep up the great work Randy!!
You are welcome Wayne and hope to see you in the Soo someday soon. Thanks for the nice words.
#9 should definitely be retired, 3rd all-time in points in the OHL, the SOO should be ashamed!!
