Sault side to Team Canada
Sault Ste. Marie is represented in a rather well rounded manner at this year’s World Junior Hockey Championships, which start on Boxing Day and go until January 5 and are being held in Ottawa.
While there is no one from Sault Ste. Marie on Team Canada, there is a definite connection to the Soo.
The father (Mike Martone) of Brampton Steelheads forward Porter Martone and the mother (Tara Coulterman) of goalie Carter George of the Owen Sound Attack both have deep Sault Ste. Marie roots.
Also named to this edition of Team Canada is Soo Greyhounds defenseman Andrew Gibson, who is from the Windsor suburb of LaSalle.
Martone, George and Gibson are three of 14 players from the Ontario Hockey League who are part of the Team Canada roster.
Then there is Team Canada head coach Dave Cameron, now of the Ottawa 67’s and a former bench boss of the Greyhounds. Cameron returns to take the reins after leading Canada to a gold medal at the 2022 World Juniors.
I certainly remember Michael back in the day and trying to recruit him for Jr. A Great family to deal with. Best of health and success to Porter and Team Canada
