Scouting 9-and-10-year old players

There just could be a future member of the Ontario Hockey League’s Oshawa Generals skating in our midst at Soo Pee Wee Arena.

In fact, we may have spotted him among the 9-and-10-year old players that we were watching during the recent Soo Pee Wee Hockey League Christmas tournament.

That’s right, we are already looking at kids who could be selected six years from now at the 2022 OHL draft.

The reason we can look that far ahead to that particular year is because, as part of a recent trade with Kingston, Oshawa acquired the Frontenacs third-round pick at the 2022 OHL draft.

That’s correct, the 2022 OHL draft, which is six years away.

While it seems absurd that OHL teams are allowed to trade away draft picks six years from now, that is exactly what Kingston did when it sent its third-round selection in 2022 to Oshawa as part of the deal that delivered high-scoring, 19-year old forward Michael Dal Colle to the Frontenacs from the Generals.

In other words, Dal Colle was traded from Oshawa to Kingston for a package that includes a player who is now 9 or 10 years old and playing novice or atom hockey.

Could that player currently be skating in the Soo Pee Wee Hockey League for one of its novice or atom teams?

We’ll know the answer to that question in six years, at the 2022 OHL draft.
