It is official, as with a signature. Sault Ste. Marie product Jack Matier has signed with the Ottawa 67’s of the Ontario Hockey League.

Ottawa took the 6-foot-2, 175-pound, right-handed shooting defenseman with its first-round pick, 21st overall, at the April 6 OHL priority selections draft.

Matier, who just recently turned 16-years of age, netted 10 goals, 12 assists, 22 points in 21 regular-season games for the Soo Minor Thunderbirds of the Great North Midget Hockey League during the 2018-2019 season.

Ottawa general manager James Boyd referred to Matier as a player that the 67’s “coveted” going into this month’s OHL draft.

“Jack is a big, mobile defender who impressed our staff throughout the season. We look forward to being a part of Jack’s continuing development,” Boyd relayed.

Ottawa’s assistant GM and director of scouting Jan Egert noted that Matier “is a player who has a high hockey sense and he’s got the ability to see beyond option one when it comes to making a play.

“The plays that he makes have purpose,” Egert noted. “He’s got a big frame … and he’ll be a mainstay on the 67’s blue line for his OHL career. There’s a lot of potential in Jack and we’re thrilled to have been able to draft him and now sign him.”

Matier recently visited Ottawa with members of his family and there was a press conference that featured the signing of the young defenseman.
