Gabe Guertler is departing the University of Minnesota to play for the Soo Greyhounds.

Greyhounds general manager Kyle Dubas confirmed today that Guertler, a 1995 birth-year centre, is leaving the Division 1, National Collegiate Athletic Association ranks to play in the Ontario Hockey League for the Soo.

A native of Plantation, Florida, the 5-foot-9, 185 pound Guertler played in 24 games for the Golden Gophers of the NCAA’s Big 10 Conference in 2013-2014, scoring two goals and adding three assists.

He had played the previous two seasons for the Fargo Force of the United States Hockey League and scored 37 goals in 73 games during the 2012-2013 season, playoffs included.

Guertler was originally drafted by the Greyhounds in the sixth round of the 2011 OHL draft from the Team Illinois under-16 program.

“Gabe is a very tenacious and skilled forward who plays the game with great speed. He has shown throughout his time as a prospect of ours that he can make plays at high speed,” Dubas said of Guertler.

What you think about “U of Minnesota to Soo Greyhounds”

  1. Came from the same place as the Beavers Knox did.
    Must breed goalies down there
Hope he is as good as Knox

  2. Randy ,
Any truth to the rumours that he was being asked to leave the Gophers because of discipline issues ?

  3. It’s funny how fast these stories get out and about . Hopefully the young man gets a clean slate with the Hounds and makes the best of a fresh start . We all make mistakes now and then you just have to learn from them and stay with it .

    1. Mike et al, look for my column on the newest Hound later this morning here on Hockey News North.
