After graduating from the Wolves and the OHL, Valiquette tended goal at the Canadian university level for four more seasons, suiting up for both the Western Mustangs and Laurentian Voyaqueurs. He is a graduate of Laurentian.

Prior to playing in the OHL, Valiquette starred for the erstwhile Sudbury Jr. Wolves of the Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League.
